The Government Won't Wait
On January 1, 2025, restrictions on the manufacture, distribution, sale, installation, import, and export of products using high-GWP (Global Warming Potential) HFCs or HFC blends came into force. Bans on maintenance of refrigeration equipment using fluorinated gases with a high GWP (2500) were also enforced.
These new rules relating to energy conservation standards for commercial refrigerators, freezers, and refrigerator-freezers mean that only the most efficient commercial refrigeration solutions should be used.
And that's not all - these regulations will only get more stringent over time with further efficiency milestones lined up for the future.
In 2026, there will be restrictions on servicing refrigeration equipment with GWP >2,500, and in 2027 the transition accelerates, with an HFC allowance of just 20 percent compared to peak levels.
By 2030, another 35 percent reduction widens equipment compliance gaps, and in 2032, the GWP limit for certain F-gases will be reduced to 750.
2036 brings the final 60 to 85 percent reduction, forcing the prohibition of outdated refrigeration.
